I remember when I was a little girl going back-to-school shopping with my mom. I needed new shoes and I fell in love with a pair of white closed-toed sandals. I wanted those shoes so badly, but my mom said no for two reasons: one, I didn’t need another pair of sandals (true) and two, no white after Labor Day. Even in grade school, I remember thinking that was the dumbest rule I had ever heard of and decided that when I was old enough, I would wear all the white I wanted after Labor Day.
Here’s the thing about fashion/style: everyone says there are “rules” but the only rule you should follow is to wear things that make you happy and feel confident in your own skin. Let’s be real: life is too dang short to try to follow silly fashion rules. I’ve found that when I wear things that I truly love and feel good in, I have a kick-a day because I don’t worry about what other people think. Plus, it’s fun to break rules and live a little on the wild side, right? (And yes, apparently my idea of living on the wild side is wearing white after Labor Day, but hey, I’m working on it.)
Anyway, I have been eyeing this adorable white peplum top from Simple Addiction for MONTHS. I always am a little weary of peplum tops because sometimes the way the peplum hits my middle can be a little unflattering, but it went on sale a few weeks ago and I finally snagged it. I love the geometric hem on the sleeves and the bottom of the shirt; it makes it feel so fancy and delicate!
Since I just got it a couple weeks ago, I definitely plan on wearing it well into September and October, so here’s how I’ve been styling this white top past Labor Day and transitioning it into fall.
Pair with Dark Denim
I love the contrast of a dark wash denim pair of jeans and a white top. Not only does dark denim feel more fall appropriate, it helps the details of the hem of this top stand out. I cuffed the bottoms of these jeans to make it feel a little more summertime and casual to balance it out.
Accessorize with Bold Jewel Tone Colors
Wearing white is the perfect excuse to accessories with pops of color. If it was in the middle of July, I would accessorize with turquoise or yellow, but since it’s after Labor Day, I changed up the color scheme. I wore my chunky red and gold necklace from Target since red seems more like a September color. I also added this dark teal clutch I snagged from Sears for FOUR dollars last week at their end of summer sale. Jewel tones are perfect for transitioning to fall, so switching out my summer brights for darker colors give this outfit more of a September feel but they still pop against the white.
I also wore these zig-zag bangles from Rue 21 because the shape perfectly mimicked the edges of my sleeves and hem. It was a perfect, but subtle way to continue the theme of geometric shapes through my jewelry.
Wear Sandals
It’s still September, after all, so I’m going to wear my sandals as much as possible before it gets too cold. I decided to wear my gold braided sandals because I felt like the geometric shape of them paired well with the crisp lines in my top, even though they were different shapes. As the weather gets cooler, I can switch the sandals out with booties, but until then, sandals for the win. I swear my toes are claustrophobic, so I’ll be wearing sandals for as long as I can!
