Double Messy Bun Hair Tutorial & Monat Review
It feels SO good to be able to sit down and share a hair tutorial today! I used to be so insecure about my hair because of how weird it grew back after chemotherapy, but blogging has really helped me move past that. Even though I don’t have perfect hair, I do HAVE hair (which is saying a lot considering it all fell out at one point) so I’m happy that I can celebrate that and share some tutorials with you on HTC!
Double Messy Bun Tutorial
Starting at my temples, I gather the top of my hair towards the top back part of my head. I make sure I leave my bangs and some hair out to frame my face, and then loosely secure the hair into a messy bun. I keep the hair loose because I want to be able to tug the hair around freely to form the right kind of shape and to be able to add some volume to my roots by “pushing” the bun up on top of my head.
After the messy bun is secured, I sweep up a second section of hair, this time, starting at my eye-line. Once again, I leave hair out at the front to frame my face. This section of hair tends to be a bit smaller compared to the top, so after I get the section all gathered together, I spray some texture spray through the ends to give it a bit more grip and hold. Then, I put this section into a messy bun directly below the first one.
Next comes the fun part - pulling and pinning! I want the second messy bun to be just as big as the top one, and I also want to make sure that the hair elastics I use are covered. So, I tug the hair around in the second messy bun and pin it up and into the first bun. This creates almost a “mohawk” effect and helps hide the hair elastics.
I finish this look by spritzing some more texturizing spray on the buns to help them keep their shape. If you want to take it a step further, you can run a curling iron through your bangs and the hair you left out! I usually let my hair do its own thing with its natural wave, though, because I think it gives it a more effortless feel!
I love this hair style, but I haven’t done it in the last few months because my hair was getting really knotty because of how dry and damaged it was. And, because I have some thin spots, it was hard to get my second bun to look full. However, Alexis (the girl who does my lash extensions) had me try Monat products over the last few weeks and my hair has done a complete 360! It’s been so healthy, strong, and thick and I’ve been able to rock the messy bun without any issues!
What is Monat?
Monat is a skin and hair product company that creates products that help heal and restore hair. Their main product is their REJUVENIQE™ Oil, which is a proprietary blend of 11+ unique molecular ingredients, which includes vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, nutrients and amino acids, suitable for all skin and hair types. Basically, the ingredients in this oil have been scientifically proven to mimic the body’s own natural oils that reduce hair thinning and adds volume and shine.
Monat products are also formulated without any parabens, sulfates, ethanol, gluten or harmful colors. As someone who has a history of cancer and who has sensitive skin, I’m very careful about what kinds of ingredients I interact with when it comes to my products, so it’s great to know that Monat products are extremely gentle and safe to use.
First Impressions of Monat
Like I mentioned before, I used the Monat system for two weeks straight so that I could really try it out before giving my first impressions of the product. Alexis also washed my hair and gave me a blow out with some additional products so I could get the full effect.
First things first: since this product is sulfate free, the shampoo does not foam up like a typical shampoo. This was a little hard to get used to at first because it didn’t feel like I was actually getting my hair clean. The trick is to get the product foaming in your hands first and then spread it into your hair. The more water in your hair, the easier it is to spread it around. After getting the hang of applying it to my hair, it was a lot easier to use. It’s just good to know that since the shampoo is sulfate free that it won’t perform like a typical shampoo, but remember, that’s a good thing! Sulfates dry out your scalp and can irritate your skin!
After washing my hair with the Monat shampoo and conditioner for the first time and drying it out, I will say that my hair felt INFITINATLY thicker. Most of you know that my hair didn’t grow back perfectly after chemotherapy and I have a lot of thin spots. After using the product for 2 weeks straight (about 6 washes) my hair was definitely thicker and stronger. And, just to see, I switched back to my old shampoo and conditioner for the last week and my hair STILL feels great. This means that the Monat results are long lasting - which makes me really happy because I’ve tried a lot of products that only deliver results as long as you are using them.
I also have some pretty dry ends from my balayage, and they were getting a little frizzy, and I definitely noticed that my ends seemed to be stronger and shinier after using Monat for the last two weeks!
When Alexis styled my hair, she also used the Monat Reshape Root Lifter, which was by far my favorite product of the lot. It gave my flat hair so much root WITHOUT making my hair feel gritty! I’ve never come across a product that delivers that kind of volume without adding some gritt to my hair, so this product was definitely a welcome surprise!
My only complaint about Monat is that their packaging is a little hard to use. Their bottles don’t have the typical caps that you screw off - you screw them off half way and the product squeezes through a hole in the cap. At first, I thought the idea was cool, but it was hard to close the cap after putting product in my hand.
Is it worth the Hype?
Even though I only used the Monat products for two weeks, I’m definitely impressed enough to want to purchase my own set to use. I have to get through a couple bottles of shampoo in my shower already (Dustin will be so mad if I bring any more into the shower before finishing older ones off) but once I do, I plan on buying a full Monat system to try consistently for a few months. I’ll definitely follow up with another post to share my results!
How do you buy it?
Monat is sold through marketing partners at hair salons, but you can order through them at any time! If you are interested in learning more about Monat, I highly suggest you get in touch with Alexis (my lash gal/Monat gal) or check out her Monat Website here. She’ll give you all the details on which system to order, what additional products you might need, and how to order.
Have you heard of or tried Monat products? What is your favorite hair product that you are using right now?
