How to Create an Outfit around Shoes!
I confess, I went out to TJ Maxx today and bought far too many things for fall. #sorrynotsorry. It got down to a gorgeous 73 degrees yesterday in New Hampshire and I didn’t waste a moment to pull out my pumpkin/apple scented candles and start burning them. I am so. stinking. ready. for all the pumpkin spice flavored, chilly weather, scarves and sweaters, apple pie and burnt orange and deep purpleness that comes with autumn. But, before I can fully embrace the coming season, I have to make sure the rest of summer goes out with a bang, and that includes wearing sandals as much as possible over the next few weeks before I put them away and bring out the boots and leg warmers.
I’ve always sworn that my toes are claustrophobic. In general, I hate to wear socks, and I hate to wear close-toed shoes (boots being the exception). During the winter, I would much rather complain about having cold toes and deal with it than actually put socks on. I love how freeing sandals feel on my feet, but oddly enough, this summer I lived in old, worn out flip flops that Rosie has chewed on when she was a pup. I didn’t have any other sandals to wear out to fancier places or dinner dates and had to put closed toed shoes on! THE HORROR!
When I saw these sandals are Ross for *gasp* $12.00, I snatched those suckers right up. They were mine, my own, my precious and I was finally going to add a much needed pair of fancy sandals to my shoe collection. But what to wear with them? I realized that most of the time I put outfits together and then add shoes as a last minute after thought. This time I decided to try to create my outfit around shoes! I thought about summer colors that would compliment the gold and cork in the details of the sandal and what accessories that would tie the look together from head to toe.
So, naturally, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and picked up this gold head piece at Rue21 for 6 bucks because I saw it and immediately thought: “This would totally match my new shoes, even though I would never wear this normally.” Clearly, that’s a sign it’s meant to be, right? However, I put this thing on my head and instantly loved it. It’s so, so outside my normal style and I love that! I’m learning to be confident in whatever I decide to try to rock! Thanks to a pair of shoes with some gold in them, I was able to bring the gold theme all the way to my head! The tangerine colored pants (on sale at Rue21 for 5 bucks) seemed like a natural fit because it was in the same color family and the white top (Tommy Hilfiger find at Marshall’s) gave a great break from all the gold/warm tones I was piling on.
I even brought the gold to my makeup by piling on Colour Pop’s super shock eyeshadow in the shade Kathleen Lights!
Not only is this one of my favorite outfits of the summer, I loved that it was inspired by a pair of sandals. I mean, I have always loved shoes, but I never thought of building an outfit around them and making them the hero! I’m now staring at my shoes in my closet at 11:30 at night, wondering what other types of outfits I can put together around them…which means I’m going to be up pretty late thinking about shoes. #firstworldproblems
Man, I am feeling sassy tonight. It’s way past my bedtime.
What are your thoughts on shoes? Have you ever built an outfit around a pair of shoes? How are you feeling about that headpiece thing on my head? Is it weird or is it cool? I still can’t decide, even though I like it.
