Skin Care Resolutions to Start in 2019
I’ve partnered with the Dove team for today’s post – all opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that support HTC.
Well, it’s no secret to my Instagram family that I’ve been on one heck of a skin journey over the last few months. I went from having the best/clearest skin of my adult life to having the worst skin of my whole life in general. Painful cystic acne, uneven skin tone and texture, and dry patches everywhere. As a self-proclaimed beauty-junkie, it’s been frustrating and a bit scary to have my skin have this kind of meltdown of epic proportions. I’ve been worried I would have to get rid of all my favorite makeup and haircare products and change my diet if things didn’t start looking up. Before going to such extreme lengths, I decided to make a few small (but important) changes and skincare resolutions this year to see if I could make improvements on my own.
I know I’m not alone in struggling with my skin. So many of you have chatted with me on Instagram, sharing your skincare problems and trading products/suggestions with me about what might work or improve my skin. That’s why I wanted to sit down and share a few of my skincare resolutions to help anyone who might be in the same boat as me. It’s frustrating and discouraging to feel self-conscious about your skin, and I know that feeling self-conscious is the last thing I want to worry about in 2019!
So, here are three skincare resolutions I’m making in 2019 to help me improve my overall skin care!
- Eliminate sugary drinks/soda and increase my water intake. Yikes! That is scary for me to put in writing, since I’ll be the first to admit that I am a HARDCORE root beer addict. I could drink root beer all day, every day and absolutely never get sick of it. However, I know that all the added sugar that go into soda is not doing my body or my skin any good. Additionally, caffeine in soda can dehydrate skin. Since I already struggle with dry skin, I definitely do not want to strip the little hydration I have away from it. My sister recently went all of last year without drinking soda and her skin looks fantastic, soooo…I’m going to give it a go. No soda for 2019 (with the ONE exception of a root beer on my birthday, because it’s my birthday).
- Get 8 Hours of Beauty Sleep a night. Even though I’m in my bed by 10:00 PM every night, I typically am on my phone until midnight and then up by 5:30 AM to go to the gym. That’s only five and a half hours of sleep a night – no wonder why my skin is so sad. They call it beauty sleep for a reason – because when you sleep, your skin works hard to repair itself from any harsh elements it encountered during the day and replenishes collagen. So, time to put the phone down at 10PM and be asleep as quickly as possible so my skin can have more time to repair itself (and so I can have more energy during the day!)
- Use products that protect the microbiome layer of my skin. I know you’re thinking, “what the heck is that?” I had no idea what the microbiome layer was either, until recently. The microbiome layer is the skin’s living protective layer and a balanced diverse skin microbiome serves an important role in keeping skin healthy, moisturized, and resilient. There are a lot of products out there that are harsh to the microbiome . To maintain a balanced skin microbiome, you need to be gentle on your skin, and that means using products that are formulated to work with the microbiome layer, not against it. That’s why I’ve replaced all my body wash products with Dove (including their Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash, Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash, and Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash.) Dove Body Wash is microbiome gentle, is sulfate-free and pH balanced. It also happens to be the #1 dermatologist recommended body wash, so basically, you cannot go wrong with this It’s available at mass, food and drug retailers nationwide and retails for $5.99/22 fl. oz. Talk about affordable and talk about NO EXCUSES to not be more gentle on your skin and its microbiome in 2019.
I’m hopeful and excited for 2019 and all that it has in store for us, and I’m feeling motivated and confident in taking my skin back from the monsters that have destroyed these last few months. I have plenty of water bottles, I have a bed-time alarm set on my FitBit, and I’m stocked up on Dove Body Wash.
I’d love it if you’d join me in these 2019 New Year skincare resolutions so you can keep me accountable – are you in?
