When I first started getting more into makeup, I would spend HOURS walking around the isle of Ulta or Sephora, swatching everything but never buying anything. I was ten times worse in the drugstore section because I couldn’t even swatch things there! I would just pick up bottles, look at them, walk around with them in my hands and then put them back. Why? I was terrified of actually spending my money because I had no clue if the product would work for me or if it was actually worth the $$$. With so many options and claims and the whole “drugstore vs high end” struggle, I rarely walked away with any purchases because I just didn’t know. I mean, I knew I wanted makeup that actually worked and wasn’t frustrating to put on, but I didn’t know what was worth the splurge and what the hidden gems in the drugstore aisles were.
One of my goals here at Hey There, Chelsie, is to eliminate that constant anxiety you might feel when you go into the makeup store wanting to spoil yourself with something but feeling overwhelmed at all the options. Makeup should be fun and not scary! So, I’m introducing a new series on the blog called Worth the Hype? where I’ll be reviewing IN DEPTH a makeup product that is getting a lot of attention in the beauty world and letting you honestly know if it’s worth your money. And, I will also strive to share two-three different looks with each product so you can get a sense of what to do with that shiny new piece of makeup if you choose to buy it!
Bare in mind, everyone experiences the same makeup product a little bit differently (one of my best blog buds, Jaelan at Making Mrs. M and I always seem to be on the opposite sides of opinions on drugstore products) but being armed with information can help you make an informative decision about what makeup to buy and what to skip!
So, with all the being said, I bring you to today’s Worth The Hype product: The Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly Palette
I’m sure it’s not a secret that my favorite, FAVORITE high-end brand of makeup is Too Faced. Yep, I said it. It’s my favorite. I’m pretty sure I haven’t met a Too Faced product that I haven’t loved and I’ve tried almost everything that they have. So, when my three month no-spend makeup period was up, you bet I marched myself right over to Ulta to check out their newest palette and see if I wanted to add it to my collection. Youtube and social media had been BLOWING UP about this new palette and there was a ton of hype surrounding it.
This palette was built around the shade Peanut Butter, which originally appeared in their Semi-Sweet palette (and which everyone obsessed over.) It’s exclusive to Ulta and the Too Faced website and has been selling like hot cakes. It comes with nine matte and shimmer shades, formulated with the Too Faced classic antioxidant-rich cocoa powder that is standard in all of their shadows.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to buy this palette at first because it didn’t seem as versatile in the pictures. But, once I swatched the shadows in the store, I was sold. I knew I had to give it a go.
Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly Swatches:
All of these swatches were with one-two swipes and with no primer! Yes, they are this pigmented! The texture of these shadows are incredibly buttery, smooth and soft. The mattes do not swatch patchy and blend out beautifully (plus they smell like peanut butter)
Above, left to right are the bigger pans of shadows, used as bases and brow bone highlights: Extra Creamy (matte creamy beige) Bananas (soft peach-gold fine shimmer) Spread the Love (peach with gold sparkle)
Above, left to right: Peanut Butter (matte medium orange brown) Peanut Brittle (metallic burnt orange) Jelly (vibrant orchid)
Above, left to right: Peanut Butter Cup (metallic golden bronze with gold sparkle) Jammin’ (dark chocolate with golden sparkle) and Nuts about U (Matte brown with red)
Descriptions vs. Swatches
I wanted to make a few notes on the descriptions of the shadows from Too Faced and how I felt like they actually swatched.
Spread the Love looks like a peach matte in the photo but actually has rather large chunks of gold glitter in the pan.
Jammin’ is described as a dark chocolate, but swatches more of an aubergine (a purple/brown) and when paired with a purple shadow like Jelly, looks even more purple than brown. Also, it does not have chunky glitter.
Nuts about U is the perfect terracotta shade. It reminds me a lot of ABH’s Fudge, but just a tiny bit more red.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Palette Review
Too Faced doesn’t disappoint with this palette at all. Like I mentioned, I was a bit concerned that there were so many similar warm brown shades that this palette wouldn’t be very versatile, but after playing around, I feel like each warm shade is different enough to create a variety of looks.
I’m normally not super picky about packaging, but the packaging on this is SUPER cute. The little peanut butter sandwich is adorable and the tin has magnets to keep it closed shut while traveling. Speaking of which, it’s the perfect size for traveling since it’s a bit more compact than a full-sized palette. This is the only palette I left out during the week of our move and it fit perfectly in my makeup bag and I was able to create a new look out of it every day!
My favorite shades in this palette are Jelly, Nuts About You and Peanut Butter Cup. I only have beef with one shade (Spread the Love) because the gold glitter in it is too chunky for my taste. Still, can be used as a nice transition shade to help blend out the darker colors so I will still be able to use it, however, I wish it was just a straight matte. Nuts about You and Peanut Butter Cup are so beautiful and don’t need any fix+ to get the intensity you would want and stand alone as great all-over-lid shadows.
Three Looks with Too Faced Peanut Butter & Jelly:
Look One – Pop of Color in the Water Line:
I created this look by putting peanut butter in the crease and then patting Nuts About You all over the lid. I packed Peanut Butter Cup in the outer corner and dragged it slightly into my crease. I lined my eyes with my Kat Von D liquid Liner and popped on some Ardell Wispies. I lined my eyes with a NYX purple liner and then blended it out with Jelly on a pencil dress. I highlighted the inner corner with Bananas!
Look Two – Blown Out Purple Smoky Eye
This is my favorite look to create with this palette because it really plays up my brown eyes! I start by slowly building up Jelly in my crease until I get the desired color. I pack Jammin’ all over my lid and then take Jelly back in and continue to blend it out. I lined my lid with a wing using the Stila Liquid Liner and used House of Lashes in Featurette. I lined my water line using L’Oreal’s liner in purple and then smoke out my lower lash line with Jelly. I highlighted my inner corner with ColourPop’s highlight in Smoke & Whistles.
So, is it worth the Hype?
If warm shadows are your jam or if you have brown or green eyes, I say yes, you definitely need it in your life. If you aren’t as crazy over the warm buttery browns or purple, I say you can skip it and invest in a Chocolate Bar palette (my holy grail) from Too Faced because it will give you a little bit more to work with.
The Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly Palette retails for $36 dollars and can be purchased at Ulta or on the TooFaced.com website.
