Reading Circle-January
All imaged c/o goodreads.
I’m not off to a very good start for my reading goal of 75 books this year! I should be reading between 6-7 books a month and in January I only got through three! What? For someone who loves to read, that’s not my best. Thankfully, I am already on track for February, so we’ll just call January a fluke month!
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry-★★★★
This story follows ten-year-old Annemarie who is living in Denmark during WWII.
Her friend is a Jew and she becomes part of a plot to smuggle her family out of Denmark as the Nazis start searching for Jewish Families.
I read this in a day while substituting for a friend’s middle school class. It was an easy read, but covered sensitive material. It didn’t sugar coat what was happening during that time, but explained it in a way that was age appropriate. I liked that it was a different take on WWII without going into the concentration camps or gas chambers. This book left me with a profound sense of what even small children went through during this time period.
Peace, Love and Baby Ducks by Lauren Myracle-★★★
Peace, Love and Baby Ducks follows the lives of two sisters who are super different from one another. Carly is the older; she is a wannabe flower child who feels stuck in a privileged life in a suburb of Atlanta. Her little sister, Anna, is a really beautiful and developed and would be considered worldly. As Anna starts high school, Carly is forced to face Anna’s beauty compared to her own and struggles to find the line between being a sister and being a friend.
I really enjoyed this book and the reader (I listened to this as an audio book). I think it was a little draggy in some points and had a love/hate relationship with Carly that made me want to scream at times. I do think the characters were well developed and the questions of friendship and family that were raised were very intriguing. It wasn’t my favorite Myracle book. I enjoyed Shine much more.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling-★★★★★
Okay, I know I’ve read this book a hundred times. But, my husband hasn’t read them at all. I know, is he even American? For Christmas, Dustin bought me the most beautiful hard covered, thick papered set of Harry Potter books and I finally convinced him to read them! I told him that if I was going to raise our future kids on Harry Potter, he needed to know what they were all about. So, we read the first one together, aloud. And now, we are in the middle of number two!
If you follow me on pinterest, you may know I have a board dedicated strictly to all things Harry Potter. I am not ashamed. Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood and I will be forever grateful for the lessons I learned from the characters and the way it ignited my imagination.
What are you reading this month? Any books I need to check out?
