In my post about D and I becoming debt free, I mentioned how I got serious about meal planning and grocery shopping, which helped us cut our grocery bill in half. Before my obsession with meal planning started, I would pick a few things out that I might want to make before going to the store, but I basically just walk into Winco and make up our dinners as I shopped. This resulted in two issues: One: I would end up buying food for about 15 different potential meals and never remember later in the week what I was planning on making and Two: I would buy so much produce and we would never eat it all before it went bad. We were wasting so much money and the amount of food . . .
One of my favorite things about cool fall weather and the transition from hot, dry days to blustery, crisp days is being able to make soup for dinner. I LOVE soups and stews and if I had it my way, I would eat soup three-four times a week. Dustin isn't as big of a soup fanatic as I am, but is a good sport when I announce to him that I'm making soup AGAIN for dinner. I have been contemplating whether or not to write about this because it's personal and slightly embarrassing. D and I have been working on this goal since before we got married and it's been a long time coming. We learned a lot about money, finances and sacrifices while going through this process and maybe some of the tips we picked up might help someone else someday down the line. Rosie has been causing all kinds of trouble lately. She ripped the arm and ear off her new monkey toy that we brought her home from our Boston trip. She decided to roll in a big fat fresh turd about 40 minutes before I had to go to work. Alright, so we already have established that I LOVE autumn time more then any other season. From the hats and boots, to the changing leaves and really hearty and warm meals, I could live in Autumn weather forever. When the weather starts to change, you can bet that I am breaking out my slow cooker and making all kinds of autumn meals. One of my favorite go-to slow cooker recipes is pot roast.
